Performers have a tendency to get in their own way when it comes to auditions.

By finding a new song for each audition, you add so much stress and pressure to a process that SHOULD be FUN!!

Yes, that's right. I just said that auditions should be FUN!

Think about it. We all want to be in shows so that we can be on stage and perform and showcase how awesome we are right? (and yes, the community that comes along WITH a show is nice too!)

Well what do you think an audition is?!!

It's a opportunity to be on stage, perform, and showcase how awesome we are...but even better because WE get to CHOOSE the role we are going to play!!

So what should you do instead?

Build a book of songs that is ready to go at a moment's notice, covers most of the categories you will need for auditions, and

uniquely showcases what YOU have to offer!

People have a habit of over complicating things (and let's be honest, us artsy types are even WORSE at overthinking everything right?!)

So while you are scrambling to cram a new song into your memory a week before the audition, wasting time you SHOULD be using tailoring your delivery for this specific audition, your competition is sailing into the room, killing it, and booking shows all over town!

So, let’s get right to it and take you to today’s hw!

YOUR DAY 1 HOMEWORK:

1.  What is a type of song you often find yourself scrambling to find?

2.  Is there an upcoming audition you need to prepare for, or if you don't have one in mind yet, can you find one that you'd like to attend in a few weeks? Get SPECIFIC.

3. Answer the following questions when thinking about a successful audition song:

✔️What qualities or characteristics of your talent does it showcase? In other words, what makes it a successful song?
✔️What type of role are you going after? Are you auditioning for the lead/supporting/ensemble?
✔️How much time can you realistically commit to preparing for an audition? What might you have to put aside or sacrifice in order to make room in your schedule?
✔️Describe your previous audition prep process. What has auditioning been like for you?
✔️What obstacles do you face when preparing for an audition (internally and externally)?
✔️What will you use to measure audition success?

YOUR ACTION STEPS FOR TODAY:

1. Post your answers below with the Hashtag #ABC#Day1. Be sure to include what genre of song you will be adding to your book as well as any upcoming audition you are preparing for.

2. At 12PM EST/9AM PST, a new VIDEO COACHING will be posted in this group, where I’ll guide you through the basic principles of today's assignment.

Grab your audition journal and finish + post your hw below this post.

I’ll personally check your response and give you my feedback!

Let’s do this!!

It's Day 2 of our 5-Day Add a Song to Your Audition Book Challenge!

I can't wait to see and hear the songs you all find!

“I have to find the PERFECT song for this audition!”

How many times have I said THAT before?!  How many times have YOU?

And let me ask you this.  Did you ever find it?

It's not about finding a magical song that will guarantee success at your audition. It's about finding the song(s) that showcase your talents and individuality the best.

Now that you have decided what type of song you are looking for, it's time to do your research.

There are a ton of great places you can look for song options, the most obvious being YouTube and Google, but have you thought of Pinterest as well?  You'd be surprised how many posts you will find there as well!

To get you started, here is a link to my Pinterest board dedicated to helping you find songs based on voice type:

https://www.pinterest.com/triplethreattherapy/audition-songs-by-voice-type/

Narrow your options by using the right keywords when you search.

When you include things like voice type, genre, even the tempo and/or composer, you can avoid the inevitable overwhelm of having too many songs to choose from!

I can't wait to see the songs you find!!

DAY 2: SONG RESEARCH: THE SECRET TO FINDING YOUR NEXT AUDITION SONG

YOUR DAY 2 HOMEWORK:

1. Make a list of songs that fit your current requirements (5-6 songs is best)

2. Take #1 a step further by finding a YouTube recording of each song. As you listen to them, make some notes about how they make you feel. Do you relate to any of them in particular?

3. Once you have a shorter list of songs that you relate to, sing through them. You need to see how they feel in your voice. By the end of this process, you should be left with 2 songs that are your best options.

YOUR ACTION STEPS FOR TODAY:

1. Post your answers below with the Hashtag #ABC#Day2

2. At 12PM EST EST/9AM PST, a new VIDEO COACHING will be posted in this group, where I’ll guide you through the basic principles of today's assignment.

This tip alone has made a HUGE difference for me in finding songs that feel authentic to me. This will be a game changer for your auditions!

Let’s get to work!

Auditions come in all shapes and sizes (and lengths) and you need to be prepared for every situation.

It seems like these days, rather than focusing on a bar count, breakdowns are more about a time limit...which I personally prefer!  That being said, 1 minute is typically pretty close to 32 bars so for this challenge, we'll start there.

Take a look at the two songs you narrowed down to yesterday during your homework.

What is it that caused you to choose those songs? Is there a specific character that they depict, or certain vocal range that they display?

Choose your 32-bar cuts for each song.

As much as is possible, try to make sure they are a complete thought.

DAY 3: AUDITION CUTS - THEY CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR AUDITION

The initial vocal audition is literally the only part of the audition that you can truly prepare for, so do NOT waste that opportunity!

The panel knows this as well so they will be far more forgiving when it comes to a dance call or cold read than they will be a song that you brought to them.

They want to see:

✔️That you know your instrument well enough to pick a song that truly
      showcases your abilities
✔️That you are willing to put in the work to be your best (like you will if they
cast you in their show, right?!)
✔️What YOU have to offer that no one else has

So let’s dive into today’s hw.

YOUR DAY 3 HOMEWORK:

1. Determine what aspect(s) of your talent you are trying to convey with this song. Is it more about vocal range and technique, a specific character type, or both?

2. Based off of your answer for #1, sing through different cuts of each song to see and feel what bars are best to showcase that part of your skill. Should it be the beginning, the end, or somewhere in the middle of the song?

3. When choosing your cut, do your best to make sure that you are singing as complete a thought as possible. Do you need to add a bar or two, or maybe even cut your 32 bars short?

YOUR ACTION STEPS FOR TODAY:

1. Post your answers (measure # to measure #) in the comments below with the Hashtag #ABC #Day3

2. At 12PM EST EST/9AM PST, watch the video training IN THIS GROUP where I will give you some tips and examples of good (and bad) audition cuts.

Let’s get to work!

I'm looking forward to seeing your cuts and helping you to edit them as needed!

DAY 4 - FEEDBACK IS ESSENTIAL

True story: Before I started using this method of preparing for auditions, the first time I "performed" my audition song was literally IN the audition!

Let that sink in.  Sound familiar?

Imagine performing a musical without any direction.

That's insane right?!

Why would you treat your audition any differently?

I get that most of us don't have the time or money to schedule an audition session with our coach before EVERY audition...especially if you are getting out there and auditioning every day (or multiple times a day!)

That's why your Audition Book is SO important!

Each of those songs will have been selected and polished with the help of your coach, and you will have their expert feedback to refer back to audition after audition ( you DO record all of your sessions, right?!)

OK, assignment time! It's no accident that today's assignment lands on July 4th. I'm hoping that:

       A. You (hopefully) have the day off of work (if you are in the US!) which will
give you a little bit of extra time to spend on today's assignment.

       B. July 4th is the day we celebrate independence (freedom) in America and
I KNOW that once you have your Brand New or New and Improved
Audition Book ready to go, you will be celebrating your independence
(freedom) from the stress and fear that often accompanies vocal
           auditions.

YOUR DAY 4 HOMEWORK:

1. Create a video submission (self-tape) of each song's audition cut option.  (you can use a karaoke track you find on YouTube for the accompaniment)

2. Be honest: Do you feel weird putting it on video? How do you feel about watching your own performance back? What do you notice that you are/aren't doing that you thought was reading differently?

3. Post both videos in the comments here. Include the name of the song, and what genre or hole you want it to fill in your Book.

4. You may comment on the videos of other participants but positive feedback only. Any negative comments will be deleted with love. I will be in the group providing feedback and critique for each participant, each video.

YOUR ACTION STEPS FOR TODAY:

1. Post your answers BELOW with the Hashtag #ABC #Day4

2. At 12PM EST EST/9AM PST, I will post a video example of one of my songs as I was preparing it for audition.  I will share some tips that have helped me to improve my presence and performance using these practice "self-tapes".

Can't wait to see and hear your awesome performances!!!
